What should you check before the first heavy autumn rain in the Algarve?

Follow the water from high to low

From safe ground, identify roof edges, gutters, downpipes, parapet outlets, terrace drains, patio channels and the final discharge point. Look for leaves, nests, moss, soil, displaced grilles and staining that shows previous overflow.

A clear opening is not enough if the next section is blocked or discharges against the wall.

• Photograph each outlet before cleaning
• Check that covers and grilles are seated correctly
• Keep movable objects away from flow paths

Use a controlled water test where appropriate

On accessible ground-level drains, a modest controlled test can show slow flow, back-up or leakage at a joint. Do not flood a roof, use a hose near electrical equipment or test a system when the receiving drain is already overloaded.

If water disappears into a concealed route, record the entry and visible exit instead of assuming the full path is sound.

Know when cleaning is not enough

Repeated overflow, cracked joints, loose gutters, water behind render, ponding on a terrace or discharge next to the foundation can require repair or redesign. Take wide and close photographs and repeat the same positions during the next rain from a safe place.

• Record interior damp near the same wall
• Keep access instructions ready for an absent owner
