When can you use a room after interior painting?

Understand the four different clocks

A technical sheet may give a touch-dry time and a minimum interval before another coat. It may not use the same wording for gentle occupancy, furniture contact, washing or full cure. These are different decisions.

For one example interior water-based paint, Robbialac states 1–2 hours drying and 3–4 hours before the next coat at about 20 °C in well-ventilated conditions. That is product-specific, not a universal promise: temperature, humidity, airflow, film thickness and substrate can change the result.

Plan ventilation and re-entry

Follow the product label and safety information. EPA guidance recommends plenty of fresh air during painting and afterwards because emissions are usually greatest while coatings dry. Keep children, pets and people with particular sensitivities away from the work area for the period advised for the product and conditions.

Do not use fragrance as the only test. Check the coating, airflow and the instructions supplied at handover.

Ask for a useful handover note

The final note should identify the product, colour, number of coats, application date and room conditions. It should also state when furniture may return, when walls may be wiped or washed and how long to avoid adhesives, bumping or pressure on the new finish.
